All things green engineering: design, best practices, process modeling, sustainability assessment, and more!
The Sustainable Design, Systems, and Decision-making (S2D2) Lab at the Pennsylvania State University focuses on leveraging tools and technologies for sustainability transformation, particularly in the areas of sustainable design and optimization, industrial biotech, food-energy-water systems, plastics recycling, and waste valorization. Our approach navigates decision-making by linking engineering metrics with sustainability analyses including life cycle assessment (LCA; for environmental impacts) and techno-economic analysis (TEA; for financial viability) under uncertainty. We leverage fundamental engineering insights to elucidate research needs to advance the technical, environmental, and economic performance of engineered systems as we transition to a circular economy through technology innovation.
Multiple openings are available in our group: Funded PhD Opportunities | Masters Students | Postdoctoral Researchers
Highly motivated students with bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Energy Engineering or a related field are encouraged to apply. All graduate students are fully supported.
Successful candidate will have expertise in some of the following areas: • Life cycle assessment, systems analysis
• Industrial biotechnology, waste valorization • Process design, synthesis and analysis • Computational modeling & data analytics
Undergraduate students who want to gain the research experience are encouraged to apply. We currently have part-time undergraduate research positions for students who have background in chemical engineering, agricultural and biological engineering, computer engineering, and data science.
